This week in crypto…

Everything you need to know to stay on top in Web3

🚨 SBF arrested

Seems like the FTX saga is neverending. Just last Friday, SBF tweeted he would testify in front of Congress on December 13th. Alas, he got arrested so he wasn’t able to make it. Coincidence? AOC didn’t think so. The hearing still happened and it went as well as you might expect it. If you’ve got no taste for Congressional hearings, we recommend this thread for a TLDR.

Meanwhile, SBF appeared in court in Nassau yesterday and was denied bail. The extradition hearing will be held on February 8th. SBF is reportedly getting charged with wire fraud, wire fraud conspiracy, securities fraud, securities fraud conspiracy, and money laundering. 🙃

🚀 Ledger launches Ledger Stax

Ledger just opened orders for their new hardware device which is set to ship in March 2023. Ledger Stax has a display that shows transaction details and NFTs. It’s credit-card sized and has magnets so you can stack your different wallets on top of each other. A huge win for onboarding, security, and self-custody, if you ask us. Take a look.

📰 In other news…

People are FUDing Binance, resulting in a mini-bank run. Redditors minted 5 million NFTs (!!!) and Starbucks launched its NFT rewards platform on Polygon. Oh, and celebrities are getting sued for endorsing BAYC.

TLDR: What are ERC token standards? 📚

ERC token standards describe rules that developers need to take into account when creating tokens on the Ethereum network.

Standards are a result of Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) that define token and smart contract rules (among other things). They get adopted as Ethereum Request for Comment (ERC) standards and are used to ensure interoperability and composability within Ethereum. 💯

The most popular ERC is probably ERC-20, a standard that defines the creation, management, and usage of fungible Ethereum tokens. Let’s take a look.👇🏽

NFTs, being non-fungible, fall under a different set of rules.

Typically, developers use ERC-721 and ERC-1155 standards. For example, we used the Azuki-developed ERC-721A standard to minimize gas for batch minting.

The main difference between ERC-721 and ERC-1155 is that 1155 allows for a smart contract to produce both fungible and non-fungible tokens. Check it out. 👇🏽

You can learn more about these standards by reading their respective EIPs: 20, 721, and 1155.

Or… you can take our Surge Web3 Stack course where our teacher Zuza covers all things ERCs, EIPs, and their implementation. 😉
